HEY EVERYONE! This version is now 'classic', and no longer for sale. Don't worry, a new one is on the way, and if you payed for this version, then you are eligible to receive the update for free. Visit www.mysteriouscastle.com.
Fast paced, turn based. Simple interface, complex possibilities.
Roguelike-like redefined! This graphical adventure game pits a party of characters against a procedurally generated world made up of treacherous forests, caves and, of course, mysterious castles! Turn based combat based on (but not limited by) the award winning and ubiquitous SRD 3.5 standard provides endless tactical possibilities, as you go up against parties of Orcs, Undead, Dark Elves, Demons and more! Collect amazing items to wield in battle, study old tomes to increase your skills, and gather mushrooms to brew into powerful spells. An incredibly minimal interface devoid of the clutter so common to roguelikes lets you perform both simple and complex actions with ease. Lighthearted coffee-break combat or meticulous powergaming, the choice is yours.
Windows: Simply unzip the archive and place the resulting folder wherever you like. Open the folder and double click on "Mysterious Castle" to play. You can change the graphics configuration by running Config.exe.
Mac OS X: Unzip the archive and place the resulting folder wherever you like. Open the folder and double click on "Mysterious Castle 1.9" to play. If the game doesn't work, then command (right) click on "Mysterious Castle 1.9", select "Get Info", toggle the "Open in 32-bit mode" setting, and try again.
IF YOUR RUNNING 64BIT WINDOWS, PLEASE TRY THE DEMO FIRST! I've tested the game on a 64bit AMD machine, but there have been sporadic reports of problems on some 64bit Windows systems.
Windows XP or higher, 32 bit, 800 MHZ processor or higher, at least 512 MB RAM, DirectX 9 or higher.
Mac OS X 10.6 or higher, Intel processor. May work on some Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 configurations, try the demo before purchasing.

Wonderful game. Beautiful
Wonderful game.
Beautiful minimal art, amazing music, overall great atmosphere and setting, ambience, and options.
With randomly generated areas, this game always offers a challenge.
Pay what you want: This is as good as indy games get.
Can't WAIT for the new version!
BUY THIS GAME!
An interesting and still
An interesting and still developing game, taking the combat of classic D20 systems and throwing you and your party into a randomly generated environment.
There are definite peaks in the difficulty, although some understanding and experimentation with generating a balanced group will help. Also, if you're struggling in an encounter, knowing when to run away and find targets at a more suitable level is sometimes key. Returning later with a few new spells and items and crushing previously powerful enemies is satisfying.
If you like the combat in turn based rpgs like Icewind Dale but just want a quick play this game is perfect.
I'm looking forward to further updates and messing around with different party combinations
I've been playing this game
I've been playing this game for a while now, since version 1.5 (I think) and I absolutely love it, I've completed it twice now, once on my iPhone and once on my Mac, and am currently replaying it with version 1.9 on my phone, the new features are great including updates to how the inventory works so it makes it a lot smoother when swapping items between party members, There are now dungeons i've found in cave (love those) and some new monster types. :)
Admittedly the game is hard (although the elements can be tweaked more to the players advantage by creating a custom game), and involves a lot of trial and error tactically, for instance, this morning, it took me 5 tries to defeat an area containing 11 Kobolds, 2 Giants and a Gazer but part of the fun is the sense of achievement when you finally beat a particularly difficult battle, my favourite tactic at the moment is leading a party of monsters into another and watching them fight it out. hehe :)
I grew up playing games like these in the 80s/90s and artwork and gamplay both lend a certain nostalgic value to the experience, I love the fact that you can't tell what might be around the corner, the lighting mechanic adds to the eerie sense of exploring a dark wood at night and the sounds and music add the perfect ambience to the whole, plus the sense of intense relief when you find the village is palpable and likewise when you find the heal spell! I like the fact that you have to be vigilant (and spend a lot of time sneaking around) and seriously conserve your fruit and mushrooms as they don't replenish, these all add to the involvement of keeping your party intact.
Checking the Developer's webpage reveals that there will be a lot more features/extras added in future updates, and TBH i'm really impressed by how much time is being devoted to what obviously is a labour of love... and I have to admit that I feel a lot of that love for the game myself, I seriously can't recommend it enough...
Anyway, enough waffle from me I'm going back to (hopefully) give the Necromancer another 'Spanking' that he thoroughly deserves :)
Such a shame that all the
Such a shame that all the hard work put into this game is completely wasted. It's not fun, not at all. The UI is a mess, there's no help or information about how to play the game, the combat is shallow and boring, the sound effects are taken straight from SFXr and sound horribly out of place.
The music was good though.

I want to say that I really like the detail that has gone into this game - Everything from tables and chairs to candelabras can be explored and tinkered with.
The gameplay is enjoyable as well and feels like a hybrid between Rogue-Like and Jagged Alliance.
The menu interface is also a great idea (but would like to put away opened menus easier by pressing again on the key used to open the menu as well as the opposite of that key).
However, I've found the difficulty to be unbalanced. I appreciate tough Rogue-Likes but something has to give - I couldn't make it out of the first map even afer many reloads.
If you're still tweaking this game I'd suggest either beefier equipment drops, a heal spell so that party is not dependent on littered fruit bushes (which run empty of fruit) or a decrease in the number of enemy units that bunch together and attack at one time.
Even a store offering better equipment or healing supplies, somewhere in the first map, would be of great relief.
